Pautan was exposed to art at an early age, having spent a lot of time with the Alcosebas, learning and absorbing not just the basics and principles of art, but understanding the ups and the downs of a painter’s life. This helped him define his own artistic direction, focusing on landscapes and life in the countryside, where he relocated and immersed himself.

His preferred medium is oil, thickly applied colors in broad brushstrokes, resulting in interestingly textured canvases.

Believing that meeting challenges head on can only improve his art, he allocates time to join competitions, doing both studio work and plein air. He has exhibited in Cebu, Manila, Malaysia, and Paris as well as outside of the country.
