Joel Mahilum

Joel Mahilum

Born on March 18, 1974, Joel Mahilum is the second son of the late Tony Mahilum, a celebrated artist-painter renowned for his vibrant contributions to the Philippine art scene. Growing up in a creatively stimulating environment, Joel developed an early affinity for the arts, which eventually led him to pursue formal training. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Studio Arts, from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.

Joel’s artistic journey has been deeply influenced by both his father and several notable artists, including Mary Cassatt, Manny Baldemor, Romulo Olazo, Amedeo Modigliani, and Francis Bacon. These influences are evident in his body of work, which masterfully blends classical and modern techniques while maintaining a unique, introspective perspective.

Artist's Statement

"I firmly believe that art is a product of the subconscious. Initially, what an artist envisions and paints may appear to be nonsensical, as these are simply reflections of past experiences. However, once the painting is completed, both the artist and the viewer embark on a journey to decipher its meanings and representations, cloaking the artwork in a captivating shroud of mysticism.

As an artist, I view it as my duty to delve into research and experiment with new techniques and styles that set me apart. This, in turn, becomes my contribution to Philippine Art."

Joel’s commitment to innovation and self-expression has earned him a respected place in the contemporary Philippine art landscape. Through continuous exploration of technique and form, he creates works that invite viewers to engage deeply, offering them a glimpse into the rich tapestry of his creative subconscious.
