Product Description

With just two years of a Graphics and Media course, Abellana may be considered largely self-taught. Dedicated study of the works of the Masters, with a focus on Rembrandt’s chiaroscuro applied to his favorite subjects has resulted in canvases where nature and the simplicity of everyday life takes on a dramatic expression, highlighting, hope and the beauty of life.

Abellana also sculpts, ne of his works chosen as one of the National Finalists at Metrobank Art and Design Excellence for sculpture in 2022, the same year he was awarded Founder’s Choice in the Eagle Eye Charities Inc. Jose Rizal Portrait Competition.

Jonathan Abellana

Jonathan Abellana
EARLY LIFE

Born in 1988 in Talisay, Cebu, Jonathan Abellana grew up in a family with inherent creative talent—his two brothers also excel in the arts. While city life surrounded him, he developed a deep longing for rural tranquility, which became the foundation of his early work. He initially focused on painting rural landscapes and seascapes, drawing inspiration from the mountains, fields, seaside towns, and the stories and memories gathered during his excursions.

ACADEMIC AND ARTISTIC FOUNDATIONS

Abellana initially studied Graphic and Media Design at the Cebu Institute of Technology but withdrew due to financial constraints and a realization that canvas painting brought greater fulfillment. He self-taught composition, values, and color theory, drawing from old masters and contemporary artists. He also attended sculptural lessons at Juanito Zafra Studio to deepen his understanding of anatomy, scale, and movement. A pivotal turning point came when he trained under renowned Cebu artist Kimsoy Yap Jr., refining his techniques and solidifying his place in the local art scene.

ARTISTIC INFLUENCES

- Painting: Baroque masters Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Johannes Vermeer, whose mastery of light, shadow, and storytelling shapes his work.
- Sculpture: Auguste Rodin, whose innovative techniques and expressive realism expanded his understanding of human form and movement, enriching both his 2D and 3D art.

ARTISTIC STYLE AND APPROACH

Abellana’s signature style has evolved over time. While his earlier practice centered on figurative works and genre paintings depicting the everyday lives of Filipinos, he has recently shifted his focus to still life compositions. Throughout both bodies of work, his mastery of chiaroscuro lighting—striking contrasts between light and shadow—remains a defining element.

In his current practice, he employs a more restrained, neutral palette that emphasizes subtle tonal variations and textural detail. Through meticulous rendering of natural forms—from delicate flower petals and intricate shells to ripe fruit and earthy wooden surfaces—he unveils the inherent dignity and quiet power of each subject. His work transforms ordinary scenes into compelling narratives with profound emotional depth; while figurative pieces resonated with familiar human stories, his still lifes invite contemplation of the unspoken narratives and timeless essence embedded in everyday objects. Whether portraying people or inanimate forms, he captures nuanced beauty and complexity, giving ordinary subjects extraordinary impact.

RECENT EXHIBITION: THE WEIGHT OF SILENCE

This exhibition invites viewers into a profound dialogue with the often-overlooked objects of our daily lives. In a world saturated with noise, these exquisite still life paintings serve as sanctuaries of quiet intention, transforming the mundane into moments of sacred contemplation. The title speaks to the inherent gravitas and spiritual resonance found within carefully composed scenes—not merely the absence of sound, but the palpable presence of unspoken narratives, deliberate artistry, and solemn beauty that demands a deeper, more meditative gaze.

Through a meticulous play of soft light and nuanced shadow, and rich textural rendering, everyday items are elevated into vessels of grace and reflection, arranged with gentle precision that hints at their hidden depths. This is an exploration of the profound 'weight' carried by silence: the stillness that allows for genuine perception, the pause that nurtures introspection, and the solemnity that can transform a simple arrangement into a hallowed space. "The Weight of Silence" is an invitation to slow down, feel the quietude, and discover the sacred whispers embedded within silent, enduring forms.
